Unfortunately, because of some common myths, many seniors are not comfortable exercising. Some feel too old or too frail to exercise, while others believe their medical condition prevents them from performing strenuous activity. However, the good news is that a lot of recent studies have shown that exercise need not be strenuous and
seniors of any age can safely exercise and that the benefits of exercise for seniors far outweigh the risks. Read more »

Obesity Triples In Under 5 Years

Posted By: Latest News Nov 03 2009

Research by the NHS Information Centre has revealed shocking increases in obesity levels across the UK.

In their report, the NHS announced statistics which suggest obesity has more than tripled in the last 5 years, boosting hospital admissions by 60% during 2009 alone.

Included in these admissions were cases of organ failure, Type 2 diabetes and heart disease – all conditions that can easily be attributed to the growing obesity epidemic that is sweeping the globe.

Even surgical procedures such as stomach stapling have witnessed rapid increases over the last few years.

According to the NHS, over 8,085 admissions occurred during 2008/09, an increase of over 3,000 more admissions compared to 2007/09 and 6,000 more than 2003/04.

Placed side by side it is undeniable that the UK is in the midst of an epidemic:

  • 2003/04: 1,746 obesity related admissions
  • 2007/08: 5,056 obesity related admissions
  • 2008/09: 8,085 obesity related admissions

The question now rests on: what is going to be done about it?
