Diet Supplements that Work
There is a growing body of research that is proving the benefits of natural, safe diet supplements in both losing weight and in keeping the weight off over the long term. Such supplements include appetite suppressants such as Hoodia, fat binders such as Proactol or Alli and nutrients to improve fat burning such as L-carnitine.
Hoodia gordonii is a Southern African plant that is similar to a cactus. The plant is processed to produce Hoodia supplements that work as a hunger suppressant that also boosts energy. Early studies are showing an increased effect if combined with green tea. Hoodia’s role in healthy weight loss is if you are experiencing difficulty in limiting your food intake to a healthy amount. Using an appetite suppressant to severely limit your food intake is dangerous and will not help you lose weight safely. Slowing your metabolism by not eating enough will slow your weight loss. Use an appetite suppressant to reduce the size of your meals (if they are too large) or to help prevent excess snacking between meals.
Fat binders such as Proactol and Alli work by binding with the fat from food you have eaten. They bind with the food in your stomach so that you do not absorb the fat in your small intestine. This type of diet supplement is very useful as you start to change your diet and still have too much fat in your diet, when you are having a higher fat meal as a special occasion and to help maintain your weight. There are some concerns regarding your ability to absorb good fats and to absorb fat soluble vitamins such as A, D and E. Proactol is a natural dietary supplement that reduces your fat absorption about 28% so you are still able to absorb good fats and those vitamins you need. To ensure good health, a multivitamin is recommended while you are using Proactol. Alli is also a fat binder but is a pharmaceutical product and not a natural diet supplement. This may explain why some of the side effects of Alli are not found with the natural but effective Proactol.
L-carnitine is an amino acid. Protein is made of strings of amino acids. Each amino acid has a different function in the body. L-carnitine is used to transport fat across a membrane into a part of your cells called the mitochondria. Inside the mitochondria is where fat burning (beta oxidation) occurs. Often, a deficiency in L-carnitine can prevent effective weight loss during activity. The most effective way to use L-carnitine is to take it away from food, about thirty minutes before exercise. Remember that activity and exercise are needed to release the fat from fat cells so that the fat can be used for energy in the mitochondria of your cells.
